It’s vital that you understand what you’re being asked to do in AQA English Language Paper 1 Question 4. Read on for ideas, hints and tips on how you might approach it. Focus this part of your answer on the second half of the source, from paragraph 4 to the end.

I’ve been teaching the AQA Language Paper 1 ‘Rosabel’ extract a lot recently, and I find that students generally enjoy it the most out of all of the different sample papers that are available. But, there’s always a huge debate when we get to Question 4: Is Rosabel right to be annoyed by the rich girl?

Last time, I was having a look at a sample text for Question 4, the essay question on AQA’s GCSE English Language (8700) Paper 1, exploring how to annotate and how to plan your response. That followed a post about the mechanics of the question and the markscheme to help you understand what it is all about.

GCSE English Language Paper 1, Question 4 offers some really great opportunities for students to engage with the idea of thinking and writing analytically, in the form of a ‘mini-essay’. The sequence that follows isn’t necessarily an approach I’d use with students outside of a more explicit ‘exam preparation’ context.
